Since I have received the grant, I have found a wonderful new job and have started the process necessary to be able to go back to school in the fall. I owe much of who I’ve become to WWIN. At a time in my life when I needed a little extra help, WWIN was there.

Tirza Magdiel, WWIN Intern

Volunteer Spotlight: Tirza Magdiel, Intern

Tirza started interning at the WWIN office in June 2010 after receiving her BA from Northwest University, where she is currently pursuing her MA in Social Entrepreneurship. Born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia, Tirza moved to Washington for college four years ago and has come to embrace a love for the Northwest and for coffee. She enjoys singing, reading, watching movies, and cooking.

Tirza first heard of WWIN at a networking dinner put on by her college where Robin Carey, former WWIN president and current Emeritus Council member, spoke.  Tirza decided to pursue this internship after hearing Julia’s story and how WWIN’s grants help improve the lives of women. According to Tirza, the biggest influencer and encourager in her life has always been her hard-working mother. Tirza shared that “the best thing about interning at WWIN is to see other women get empowered, encouraged, and given the chance to live the lives they deserve to have.”

Volunteering at WWIN

Visitors to WWIN’s office are surrounded by images of daring women who risked and succeeded, women like Marie Curie, Florence Nightingale, Helen Keller and Margaret Mead.  They also see the faces of other less famous, but also successful women, those who have accepted a WWIN grant and undertaken the work to make a better life for themselves.

Dr. Mead is often quoted as saying, “Never believe doubt that  a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Are you one of those throughtful, committed people? Special Events

WWIN presents two major events each year. They are called our Spring Benefit Fundraising Events and are held in Bellevue and Seattle with hundreds of guests. We have committees, which include volunteers, to manage and produce the events. These committees meet monthly beginning in the fall and the events are scheduled from March to May each year.  We can also use help setting up on the day of the events, as well as greeting guests or assisting with registration.

Unpaid Internship

WWIN provides an opportunity for a local college student to perform an Internship with the organization. Past interns have been involved in their school’s human services program, psychology program or are pre-law or pre-graduate degree students. There is a minimum 3-month commitment for at least two days a week. The interns are exposed to all aspects of managing a small non-profit organization.
